Shoukry Meets Jordanian Foreign Minister to Coordinate on the Arab Summit

Foreign Minister stresses the importance of restoring momentum for joint Arab action to face challenges

On the sidelines of the preparatory meetings for the Arab Summit currently hosted by The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met on March 27th with the Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi to coordinate preparations in the run up to the Arab Summit scheduled on March 29th.

The Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Counselor Ahmed Abu Zeid, said that Minister Shoukry expressed at the beginning of the meeting his appreciation for Jordan's efforts in order to make the Arab Summit a success, amidst the critical regional situation, which requires a thorough dialogue and further coordination and consultation between Arab countries. He noted that the Summit presents an opportunity to crystallize a common Arab vision to action in order to find real solutions for the region's crises, so as to protect the Nation State against the dangers of disintegration and terrorism.

The Spokesperson added that the two ministers discussed current issues of common interest on the regional and international arenas, that are set on the ministerial meeting and the Summit agendas, particularly the latest developments in the Palestinian cause. Minister Shoukry briefed his Jordanian counterpart on the outcome of his recent visit to Washington and his meetings with the members of the US Administration, in terms of the prospects for the Palestinian cause and the centrality of the two-state solution, as a prerequisite for resuming the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations process, in accordance to international terms of reference.

As for the Syrian and Libyan crises, as well as the situation in Yemen and Iraq, they agreed on the need to pursue efforts aimed at reaching peaceful solutions to these causes, so as to preserve these countries' sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to put an end to their peoples' suffering.

The Foreign Ministry Spokesperson also indicated that both Ministers examined issues to be addressed during the Arab Summit and mechanisms to support and enhance consultations among Arab countries with regards to the current questions and crises on the Arab arena.

 

For his part, Minister Shoukry stressed the importance of restoring momentum for joint Arab action as a framework for facing challenges, and the need to build on the Arab common fundamentals and interests. The two sides agreed in the same context on the importance of creating mechanisms that contribute to decisively countering the threats of terrorism and extremism, and seeking to spread the principles that represent the true essence of Islam.

Shoukry affirmed at the end of the meeting that Egypt's leadership and people stand by Jordan to make the Summit a success. He expressed Egypt's appreciation for the stances of The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and its efforts to achieve security and stability in the region, as well as its role in promoting joint Arab action. ​​​
