In response to a query from the Middle East News Agency (MENA) about Egypt's position regarding the ongoing consultations in the Security Council on the draft resolution proposed by the United States, France and Britain addressing the attack on the town of Khan Shaykhun in the Syrian city of Idlib, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid expressed Egypt's concern and dissatisfaction with the intensifying polarization within the Security Council on this subject as this hinders the Council's ability to put an end to the humanitarian suffering of the Syrian people.

The spokesperson stressed that Egypt will continue to put the interest of the Syrian people at the forefront of its priorities when dealing with draft resolutions concerning Syria in the Security Council. He added that Egypt's stance is in line with its stated principles and positions towards the Syrian crisis since the beginning of its outbreak, and its responsibility as a responsible member of the Security Council to ensurind respect for the Charter of the United Nations and the norms of international law and maintaining international peace and security.

The spokesperson expressed regret that the humanitarian situation of the Syrian people has been taken hostage by the differences within the Security Council. He said that Egypt will continue to make efforts to bring the positions closer to reaching a consensus that reflects the collective will of the international community, and will ultimately take the decision that is in the interest of the Syrian people.
