Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry attended, Tuesday, October 13, a Security Council meeting at the ministerial level on women, peace and security. The meeting was held in the framework of the periodic review of the Council on the implementation of Security Council resolution 1325, issued in 2000 on women, peace and security.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid said that in his statement to the Council, Foreign Minister Shoukry stressed the centrality of the role of women during times of peace and times of conflict, and the importance of providing protection for women against the risk of terrorism in times of peace, not just in times of war, since the threat of terrorism is no less dangerous and destructive to women than the dangers of armed conflict. In addition to that, he signaled that Egypt was among the first African countries to put Security Council resolution 1325 into practice, through the formulation and development of a national plan to follow-up on the implementation of the resolution.

The spokesperson added that Shoukry emphasized that the Security Council should pay more attention to the status of women under foreign occupation. He also addressed the important role played by the Cairo Center for Conflict Resolution and Peacekeeping in Africa, which organized many training courses on women and their role peacekeeping. Shoukry also stressed the importance of respecting the national sovereignty of countries and their national legislation when it comes to the assessment of the extent to which objectives associated with women, peace and security are achieved.
